Abu Dhabi Airport L&T.jpg

Midfield Terminal Complex, UAE

ESC carried out the design, supply, installation, and extraction of king post and sheet piles for temporary retention system for the many projects of Abu Dhabi Airport Construction.

Introduction

Abu Dhabi Airport Company (ADAC) Midfield terminal project is multibillion dollar project. Full terminal building, passenger and cargo facilities, and duty-free shops and restaurants include in Midfield Terminal Complex. Estimated capacity of this project will be for 27 – 40 million people per year.

ADAC has aimed to provide a world-class service to meet the demand of Abu Dhabi Government plan 2030, which is to cater for Abu Dhabi’s business and tourism growth.

ESC carried out the design, supply, installation, and extraction of king post and sheet piles for temporary retention system for the many projects of ADAC.

Temporary Retention System

King Post Retention System – Timber Infill

ESC carried out the design, supply, installation and extraction of temporary retention system for 8 no of pits to facilitate the micro tunneling construction works at Abu Dhabi Airport, UAE.  The excavation depth for the above pits is 6.85m, 15.32m (L4 Drive Pit), and 14.05m (L4 Receiving Pit) from the existing ground levels according to given drawing by client.

Site Stratigraphy

The overburden soils at this project consisted very gravelly, fine to medium siliceous carbonate sand in brown and silty color to about 0.3m from the ground level. The layer from 0.4m to 2m was very dense grayish brown followed by the big layer (from 2.1m to 8.6m deep) found weak massive, grey fine to medium grained siliceous calcarenite. After the level of 12 meter deep  ground layer was very weak massive grayish brown mottled pale reddish brown fine to medium grained.

ESC Scope

Pre-drilling was carried out at design spacing of 1.5m form a temporary retention wall using augur drilling method.

Used vibro hammer mounted on ABI rig for the installation of 12.0m long kingposts along the given alignment at the design spacing of 1.5mto form a temporary retention wall. The length of the king posts shall be 16m for 14m & 15.32m deep excavation with two levels of strutting. The gaps between the king posts shall be closed using 2” thick x 6” height x 1.5m wide wooden planks.

In order to achieve the required embedment, additional king posts were installed in front of the main wall and in between the already installed king posts in the back wall.

Sheet piles installation
Temporary retention system

After the successful completion of this Kingposts retention system, ESC got same work for the design, supply, installation and extraction of same type kingpost retention system (Timber infill) to provide temporary retention system for the taxiway fence line protection during construction of the North Ramp in the proposed Traffic Tunnel up to 8.3 meters deep.

ESC used the same procedure for the installation of 12 meter long kingposts retention system for the 8.3 meter deep and 150 LM tunnel.

Temporary Retention System

King Post Retention System – Sheet Pile Infill

ESC carried out the installation of 12.0m long king posts along the given alignment at the design spacing of 1.4m at for steel infill panels lagging to form a temporary retention wall(-----LM), for 9M deep excavation to facilitate the construction of Gravity Utility Structure at Abu Dhabi.

H beams (king posts) for the proposed temporary retention system were driven using a vibratory hammer mounted on an ABI rig. Pre-drilling was carried out prior to H beams driving.
